Project Engineer (EPC)

Department: EPC

Location: Remote

Education/Experience: B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical

Experience: 5+ years of progressively responsible work experience, preferably within utility-scale solar EPCs.

Summary:

This position will be focused on the engineering management of large, utility-scale,

ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, typically 20 MW and above. The Project Engineer will coordinate and oversee third-party engineering firms responsible for detailed design, ensuring that all engineering deliverables meet EPC, client, and utility standards.

Responsibilities include managing design progress, reviewing and approving engineering packages, supporting permitting and construction, and serving as the primary technical interface between clients, engineering subcontractors, vendors, and utilities.

Duties:

●      Provide technical oversight and coordination for all engineering activities related to utility-scale solar PV projects.

●      Manage external engineering firms through all project phases—feasibility, design, permitting, construction, and commissioning—to ensure deliverables align with EPC scope, schedule, and quality expectations.

●      Review, interpret, and communicate project requirements such as interconnection agreements, utility standards, and permitting conditions, ensuring the design team produces compliant solutions.

●      Lead internal and external design reviews to evaluate layout optimization, electrical design, constructability, and cost efficiency.

●      Ensure engineering deliverables—including layouts, single-line diagrams, grounding, and equipment details—are complete, coordinated, and ready for construction.

●      Coordinate closely with internal project managers, procurement, and construction teams to resolve design issues and support RFIs and submittals.

●      Review and verify electrical studies (load flow, short-circuit, arc-flash, and protection coordination) prepared by engineering firms.

●      Manage communication between EPC, owner’s engineers, utilities, and permitting agencies to obtain timely approvals.

●      Support construction and commissioning teams by clarifying design intent, verifying field conditions, and ensuring compliance with approved drawings.

●      Maintain up-to-date knowledge of codes and standards relevant to utility-scale solar (NEC, NESC, IEEE, UL, and utility interconnection standards).

●      Travel to project sites and stakeholder meetings as needed.

Qualifications:

●      Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering (or equivalent experience).

●      Minimum 1-2 years of experience in utility-scale solar engineering or EPC project execution.

●      Demonstrated experience managing third-party engineering consultants.

●      Strong understanding of utility-scale PV design principles including medium-voltage collection systems, substations, and interconnection requirements.

●      Familiarity with AutoCAD and the ability to review design drawings and markups.

●      Working knowledge of NEC, NESC, and relevant IEEE standards.

●      Field or construction support experience (RFIs, submittals, redlines, commissioning).

●      Excellent communication and coordination skills across cross-functional teams.

●      Highly detail-oriented with a quality-focused work ethic.

●      Self-motivated and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
